Specialization: Fitness Enemy

Elite endurance athletes are often regarded as the prototypes of elite fitness. But how would they rate if they were marked against the above fitness model? Elite endurance athletes exhibit few of the ten recognized physical skills.

American Strength and Conditioning Coach, Greg Glassman, sums it up best:

"The triathlete, cyclist, and marathoner are often regarded as the fittest athletes on earth. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The endurance athlete has trained long past any cardiovascular health benefit and has lost ground in strength, speed, and power, typically does nothing for coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy and possesses little more than average flexibility."

Specialized endurance athletes show tremendous cardiovascular endurance at their chosen sport, but they are sorely prepared for any other physical challenge. Our aim is to increase an individual’s competency at all physical tasks. In other words:

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly.
